Novell sues Microsoft for sinking WordPerfect | |

Novell filed suit against Microsoft on Friday, claiming the company used anti-competitive tactics in the desktop software market during the 1990s. As expected, the suit argues that Microsoft restrained trade from 1994 to 1996, when Novell sold its WordPerfect word processing application and Quattro Pro spreadsheet. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City, seeks unspecified damages. | ||

| I remember the bad old Word Perfect days. What I explicitly remember is the mismanagement of the product. Word Perfect did not release a Win32 version for ages and that is when their marketshare was dwindling. For a number of years after Win32 was released with NT, they continued to only support a Win16 version of Word Perfect. I was also a developer at the time and there was a lot of documentation on the Win32 API. Blaming Microsoft for their misfortune in this regard is completely inappropriate. Word Perfect / Novell were directly responsible for sinking the product. |

| Word Perfect was doing just fine until they released the pathetic versions 6 for DOS and for Windows. Word Perfect 6 for DOS ran at a fraction of the speed of version 5.1 even in text mode. It was too much code for the tiny amount of RAM and slow processors of the day. Word Perfect 6 for Windows was terribly unstable. Version 5.2 for Windows was fast and relatively stable. Microsoft Word became the word processor of choice not just because Word 6 (MS marketing named the release after Word 2 as Word 6) was superior to Word Perfect 6 (not yet owned by Novell), it was mainly because of the introduction of Office at CES in Las Vegas which made a suite of programs available for the less than the cost of Word Perfect alone. Novell later bought a sinking ship in Word Perfect and later sold it for a fraction of what they paid. Idiots. |

| OpenOffice? They still around? Actually, it seems the OpenOffice fad seems to have slowed to a crawl. Not surprised though. |
