DOJ defends its Microsoft deal | |

The U.S. Justice Department told a federal judge on Thursday that its antitrust settlement with Microsoft will stop the company's monopolistic practices and asked her to endorse it without too much tampering. In documents filed with U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, the department's attorneys said the settlement "will eliminate Microsoft's illegal practices, prevent recurrence of the same or similar practices, and restore the competitive threat that (other software) products posed prior to Microsoft's unlawful undertakings." | ||

Hey #8 that would be socialism retard. Communism is a totally different idea altogether. Free software? Free for who? The developers? I am sick and tired of people espousing their belief about the GPL and its all for the good of the "people" The only people it helps is developers who can't compete on their own. Why on earth does my grandmother need to know the specs for the MS Word doc format? Having them open doesn't help her out at all. The only reason you want that is because you want to take the easy way out. Make something better and for less money and people will use it. It's the tried and true formula.
As for "free software" yeah right. |

As GhostRider said why can't anyone on this board be honest about their blind hatred of MS. Its kinda like how people hate America. It doesn't matter what we do they are always going to hate us. And so it goes with MS . . .
Even if MS opened their file formats like you suggest you are still going to hate them. And why the big deal with saving or reading .doc format. MS Word can save something like 10 different formats. There is no lock in there. There are free viewers available for .Doc files. If anything you have choice. Explain to me why I should give away my Research and Development that I probably spent a good deal of money on to you for "free." I am sure if you paid MS they would gladly license your use of the .doc format. |

Oh and another thing, I always hear open sourcers touting about how quick they can fix bugs and the power of the open source philosophy. Why on Earth can't you reverse engineer the .doc format on your own anyways? Not smart enough? Too hard?

Wow... does nobody realize that opening the office document format is simply a token to convince stupid people something "anti-Microsoft" is happening?
There are COUNTLESS applications on the market that are 100% compatible with Office documents. Come on people. Oh, and so many of your ideas about what capitalism is are so confused and wrong they actually made me stupider. :-) You people need to look up the difference between a form of government and an economic ideology. Capitalism is NOT a form of government, so things like taxation, welfare, public schools, and business ethics have NOTHING to do with whether or not the United States is capitalist. The United States IS partially socialist, however, as several of you pointed out. That's because of the control the government exerts over free markets and businesses, NOT because of any of those other things mentioned. Price caps, minimum wage, anti-trust laws, etc... THOSE are the reasons the US isn't pure capitalism. It is 100% possible to have public holdings in a pure capitalist society as long as the public holdings are subject to the same free market conditions as the private ones are. (Of course, in the US, they're not. :-) |

#22 - Again, you ignore the fact that there are countless applications that both read and save Office documents just fine.
Whether or not Microsoft publishes that format is irrelevant; figuring it out is trivial. |
