Mac developer looks to Windows to escape Tiger | |

With Apple Computer threatening to push his product aside, longtime Mac developer Arlo Rose has moved his Konfabulator over to Windows. Back in June, Apple announced that it would offer a feature called Dashboard as part of its next version of Mac OS X, code-named Tiger. The feature, which allows easy access to a variety of small applications called widgets, is remarkably similar to Konfabulator. Rose's software also uses the term widgets to describe the types of plug-in programs it enables, small graphical applications that sit on the desktop and offer stock quotes, weather information, and so on. | ||

This is so petty it's funny... the term widgets (to describe a GUI component that the user interacts with) has been in use for at least the last 25 years! "A Windows version was already in the works when Apple announced its plans for Dashboard, but the move made the PC option all the more important." and "When you have a great idea, you want more than 2 percent of the global market to have access to it." So this has nothing whatsoever to do with Apple coming out with Dashboard and everything to do with using this opportunity to make headlines, "Mac developer threatening to move to Windows!". #1 Windows has several such products, for example take a look at Samurize: http://www.samurize.com/modules/news/ |

#4 It's all about writing scripts which are then displayed graphically by a widget of some form. However the scripting capabilities are very extensive and you can call external dll's (that you can write yourself for instance) so I don't think there are any limitations to it as such. For example the weather widget (based on the konfabulator one) is shown below:
http://www.durhamstudents.co.uk/samurize/userfiles/1171/screenshot1.gif The script for this connects to weather.com, grabs data and then passes it through to the onscreen elements, so theoretically you could apply the same principal to anything you need to do. Note that the weather widget has had the konfabulator images removed from the package. Anyways, if you're into having those sorts of widgets, then most of the scripts have already been written for them. I've always found the what's on TV and news ones the most useful. |
