Once again, Google makes Microsoft look out of date HARDLY a month goes by without Google, the world's most popular internet search engine, launching another cool product that annoys its arch-rival, Microsoft. This month's example is “Google desktop search”, a tiny bit of free software that puts a cute little icon on the taskbar of Microsoft's Windows operating system. It calls up the usual Google page that is used to perform web searches, except that users can now also find almost anything they have lost on their computers' hard drives. | ||

| #1 It has been available for a while now, but it's good to let those people who don't read the latest IT news sites know about Google Desktop. It's even good to remind them about it. I've installed this at work (where I quite often find myself trying to search through my mail box of over 140,000 emails) and it's brilliant for my needs - I can run a search and get the results sorted by emails/files/etc within seconds. It even caches things for you so you can delete an email and still search for it! I'd love for it to be able to search through additional filetypes but given the structure of Google Desktop it seems very easy for them to supply addon dll's to serve this exact purpose. |
