No Go-Ahead Stamp for Microsoft's Passport | |

Microsoft is recasting ambitions for its .Net Passport identification system, saying the service now will be limited to its own online offerings and those of close partners. Microsoft no longer sees Passport as a single sign-on system for the Web at large, a spokesperson said. | ||

See it's not the technology that Microsoft's got wrong, it's the business side. Passport would have been great if it were an open, extensible platform. This new turn in passport makes sense given Microsoft and Sun's interop agreements. I just wish passport and hailstorm had come together and worked as Microsoft claimed it would.

Thank goodness. Now maybe they will quit shoving it in our faces, mandating it to do simple stuff on their site, etc....

How could it possibly annoy you? It's not mandatory anywhere except microsft managed sites...

Ding, dong the witch is dead...
Passport was one of the worst business ideas to come from MS. The concept of users entrusting logons to their personal and financial data to MS was a hard sell. I don't mind maintaining separate logons and passwords to the various sites I visit--at least if one is compromised the whole lot isn't. #1: A bad business idea is always bad regardless of the technology behind it. Most users never see (or understand) the technology, so it is inconsequential to them. #2: A hacker's dream come true. |
