Rivals still fear Redmond and its deep pockets, but its clout is diminishing. The decision to unveil Office's source code is the proof. A few years ago, few analysts would have predicted that Microsoft (MSFT ) might share the key computer code that powers its dominant Office productivity software with dozens of foreign governments and international agencies. Yet in late September, the industry barely blinked when the world's largest software outfit announced it would open the code to one of its crown jewels. Ostensibly, Gates & Co. coughed up its code to keep customers happy and maintain a lucrative line of business with governmental organizations. A host of alternatives from StarOffice, OpenOffice, and other pretenders can do much of what Microsoft Office now does, and at a fraction of the price. | ||

#1 - Yes, competition helps drive value and innovation.
That's why I've always found it troublesome that the anti-MS crowd offered us whining instead of value and innovation as their competition to MS. |

#1: I completely agree. And since I'm a small shareholder, I wouldn't mind a kick in the rear for the stock price.
#4: Sun put forth Java which is an excellent example of innovation and competes with one of MS's strengths--dev languages and tools. Netscape's broswer dominated for a while. Firefox is up and coming. MS is still trying to unseat Palm. The non-MS and anti-MS crowd seems to be doing fine considering its a very divided community. MS with it homogenous culture and lucrative product monopolies should have been doing better. From the article: "While Microsoft remains a front-runner to provide software for those devices, it has failed to lock up the dominant market share in any category. In some cases that has been due to resistance on the part of the service providers. Mobile-phone outfits, for example, wish to supply Microsoft-powered smart phones, but they are wary of Redmond becoming their sole supplier." This is one category where MS just doesn't get it (yet). Having used 10 PDAs over the past seven years, half Palm-based and other half Windows-based, I still find myself--like the majority of PDA users--preferring the Palm OS. From the article: "Of late search-engine powerhouse Google (GOOG ) has raided Redmond's ranks for programmers." I hear the Borlandites laughing... |

Yeah, sure, Microsoft isn't scary? They continue to maintain market share in desktop OS and office productivity categories while expanding share in nearly every other product line. For example, year in and year out, Microsoft's share of the server OS category continues to grow despite all of the hype surrounding open sore distros.
Has everybody forgotten that they won the battle against the DOJ, the significant patent suits, and quelled domestic rivals. Nearly all that remains of Microsoft's legal battles is a win against the so-called European Competitive Office and that may take another couple of years to move through the courts - stayed tuned! The bottom line is Microsoft's so-called competitors instead of remaining competitive have lost revenue, profits and market share to Redmond while jousting at their perceived remedy a legal windmill a la Don Quixote. But, that's not scary, that just funny! lol |

PDAs are mostly dead. But the Windows ones are dominating. Not sure what world you are living in. |
