Gartner vice president Victor Wheatman publicly attacked Microsoft's approach to security, saying companies should not expect the sofware giant to entirely secure their networks. It's official: don't expect Microsoft to completely protect your network. "We've all been part of the biggest beta test the world has ever known -- Windows. Microsoft will not solve all of the security problems, no matter what the richest man in the world says," said Gartner vice president Victor Wheatman in a keynote speech at Gartner's IT Security Summit on Monday. | ||

the thing everyone misses is that there is Windows Security, Non-Windows, 3rd Party Security and then Network Secuirty
Only one of those problems belong to Microsoft. The biggest thing is 3rd Party Secuirty: way to much software requires admin rights to run. Most MS software does not (the main thing being Office 2000 and later). This is becuase the developers of such crap dont feel like taking the time to update their skill level to do it correctly. And dont forget about Network Secuirty. You need to do more than just block incomming traffic. Blocking outgoing traffic is the only thing that will save your ass if you get infected with a trojan (and only to a point). As for Windows XP SP2: they missed 2 really good things for the default install- user accounts created by setup are still admin (dammit!!) and Software Restriction Policies (the best kept secret in Windows World) These 2 things in addition to the really good stuff they did would have been awesome! PLEASE reconsider this. And for anyone depending on anyone to secure their networks- either hire some one to do it correctly or shut the **** up. It aint cheap, it aint easy and no ones going to do it for you. |
