Munich Reconsiders Linux Migration | |

The call for bids in the LiMux Project, as it is known in Germany, was due to begin last week. But on Friday, Green Party Alderman Jens Muehlhaus called for the city to examine the impact patents might have on the decision, in light of software patents legislation currently under consideration in the European Union. Muehlhaus said a cursory examination of Munich's proposed client software had turned up conflicts with more than 50 European software patents. The fear is that a company holding one or more of these patents could issue a "cease and desist" order to the Munich government, effectively shutting down the city's computer systems or forcing the payment of licensing fees. | ||

Patents are not only destroying IT. In the medical world patents are also having all sorts of unpleasant effects. I read an interesting article today on this subject on Wired: http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,64452,00.html
My opinion: ban patents all together. Patents are the great killer of innovation of our times. |

Well, I see all the Rhetoric has had it's intended result.
There 'might' be a problem with patents in the future (we're not sure, but hey gotta be safe ya know) so maybe we shouldn't do this. I really don't like Linux, but man. I've never seen one product with such a big-ass target on it's back, and the big boys are shooting all the arrows. Some of them not necessariliy on this dimension. |

It's not a problem with patents on software, per se; rather the issuance of stupid patents and the fact that a patent doesn't expire--thanks to Disney, et. al.
Were it not for patents on software, no software development would have been undertaken save for the GNU project. And even that is debatable due to the reasons why GNU came into being in the first place. Had there been no underlying system to attempt to "open up," then there would have been no attempt to open it. Perhaps creating no GNU at all. I, personally, have always been for patents expiring in 75 years. |

This has got to be the slowest upgrade in the history of IT. Hey, its only 14,000 workstations. What the heck is taking so long - they were just now going to go out for bids on the project. Huh?
Now, we have to hear another year of "news" drivel from the open sore zealots about these German dolts as they meander through their <snicker> decision making process! LiMux Project = the "Special Ed" of Public IT |
