Onboard Sound is "good enough" and that's all it is. If all you're doing is plugging in your headphones, or low to mid range speakers to it and listening to mp3 at or below 192KB then sure, there's no need for you to get a better sound card. And in all honesty, this is all most people want to do hence why I say that it's "good enough". However if you plug higher range speakers and then make use of them (i.e. listening to 128KB MP3's on fantastic speakers is pointless!) then onboard sound is behind a dedicated sound card. Most onboard sound chips provide a dynamic range of between 75 - 85db which is "good enough", but if you want crystal clear sound at high volumes, forget it.
