Interesting article. I'd have to say broadband is much more available now than when I got it in around 2000. At least, the new home I'm buying it's just a plug & play to get cable modem access up and running with Comcast.
But still, I'd like to see prices come down. I'd like to see every house with high speed internet, and your telephone would just do VOIP over the data channel. The technology is there, it's coming, what is holding it back right now is anachronistic laws which are still dating back to the early 20th century reguarding phone regulation. We need to get rid of large junks of the Telecom act of 1996. The goal should not be further big company consolidation, but methods by which we can promote the creation of new businesses and drive further competition with a barragge of new ideas that rethink how we deliver media today to homes and business. Federal regulation is by and large something promoted by big business to prevent new offerings from entering the market space. It is protectionist in nature, not protecting the consumers as some mistakenly believe, but the business by introducing a high barrier to entry through increased legal and redtape costs. |

I have digital cable TV (with dvr), cable broadband, and local, state-wide, and national (including Canada) long distance for about $150.00 per month. The phone is crystal clear, has more additional features for less money than telephone companies offer, and I pay just one bill a month for all my communications needs (our companies pay for my wife's and my cell phones). Its a big improvement over just a few years ago.
Meanwhile, my son is in an Army surgical residence program and they are integrating telesurgery into the curruiculum next year. Also, there is an initiative to use a combination of "smart" ID or "dog tags" and embedded tagents for better determination of health history and real time monitoring of vital signs. Your medical monitoring specialists (no it isn't a cutie Army nurse, but a computer) knows when you are getting sick before you do and more importantly wounded and the affect primarily on vital signs those wounds may have. |

jdhawk - Yeah, the tech is there. I guess I still think $150 is too much for tv, internet and phone. There ought to be a way where we can get that for $50.
The thing that gets me about cable is that it started off as you pay so there wasn't advertising. Now there is more advertising then on local broadcast, and I start asking why is that? I've not seen telesurgery in operation. I know that many hospitals now have T1 lines going out to the homes of radiologists, and they send the X-ray images digitally so that any time of the day they can get an opinion. |
