UC fires back at Microsoft in browser battle | |

The University of California hit back at Microsoft in its pitched patent battle over fundamental Web browsing technology. UC and its one-man software spinoff Eolas on July 16 filed a brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the federal circuit, in Washington, D.C., to counter Microsoft's request for an appeal in a patent infringement case that has rattled the Web, from site authors to browser vendors to standards groups. Last year, Microsoft got socked with a $521 million judgment after a jury found it guilty of infringing on Eolas's system for running plug-ins, applications like Macromedia's Flash animation software and Adobe's Acrobat document reader that run inside the Web browser. | ||

I agree diaphanein. And, Microsoft and the industry is right. If this judgement stands, it will mean millions of websites underlying code will have to be rewritten.
This is just the tip of the iceberg that constitutes trial lawyers ruining business after business and driving up costs in industry after industry. This has got to stop. We need tort reform! As an example, in other industries we have a certain VP candidate that has driven up the cost of child birth with his bogus claim that not performing Cesaren section caused Cerebral palsy. Since his sucessfull lawsuit, the number of Cesaren births has skyrocketed. The number of Cerebral palsy victims has remained the same. Cerebral palsy lawsuits have spurred doctors to order millions of medically unwarranted cesarean deliveries in recent decades. |
