IM giants drop some barriers to peace | |

After years of mudslinging, Microsoft, America Online and Yahoo on Thursday made a surprising overture toward peace in the instant-messaging wars. The companies announced that later this year Microsoft's Live Communications Server (LCS), which offers instant messaging for corporate users, will connect with AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and its own MSN Messenger. | ||

mark this day... this is the start of MSFT's conquering of the IM market (enterprise and public), for better or for worse. Yahoo and AOL basically laid down their arms for a piece of whatever msft can earn.
AOL and Yahoo's IM fortunes are now LITERALLY in MSFT's hands. It doesn't take a genius to write the next few chapters in this book. This news was truly surprising. |

#5: this only applies to users of the corporate version of Messenger (courtesy of Microsoft's Live Communications Server) and not the public IM-network. Also: MS has to pay royalties to AOL and Yahoo to get access AND obviously clients of the other networks will be able to gain access to MS's IM-protocol too (which doesn't do anything special to make users switch from those clients to the MSN Messenger client).
It's nice that IM-providers are 'working together' more but it is nothing really significant YET. MSN Messenger still won't be able to give you access to friends that use AOL or Yahoo's IM-clients. There is still no open standard for IM. :( |

rnmboon... i fully understand we are only talking the enterprise market now. But where the money is... is where the market is. And now yahoo and aol have hitched any fortunes they may make... to MSFT. To be clear, they only make money, if MSFT makes money. Thats a precarious place to be for them.
TL, any idea if apple's aol-based IM client will plug in to MS Live Comm Server? I haven't read that anywhere yet. |

god the use for this software is pointless, I really dont see how organization need such things, have they heard of these things called telephones and an application called email?
You can get more done with a 1 minute phone call then you can with a 5 minute im conversation... uhh.. I understand why consumers find it useful but what a waste of otherwise. This post was edited by KnightHawk on Friday, July 16, 2004 at 20:37. |

| knighthawk, you sound a bit old, like alot of the older folks i work with. In the meantime, us young bucks (ladies too) are using IM, web conferencing, and other collaboration tools (what you refer to as "useless" tools) to run circles around the previous generation. |
