Asked what home entertainment would like in the future, Gates said that DVD technology would be "obsolete in 10 years at the latest. If you consider that nowadays we have to carry around film and music on little silver discs and stick them in the computer, it's ridiculous," Gates said in comments reproduced in German in the mass-circulation daily Bild. "These things can scratch or simply get lost." | ||

Maybe BillGates has put in a back door into Windows that will allow him to remotely disable all DVD drives around the world. And he's planning to hit that big red button on July 14, 2014.

| The DVD being obsolete within 10 years sounds a bit like a marketing man's wish-dream. The DVD has been around for around 6 years, which would give it a total lifespan of around 16 years: that is just too short if you compare it to other succesfull media types. |

Let's see, I have over 400 DVD's in my collection at a cost in excess of $5000 and this bone-head Gates thinks I'm going to just say "Oh, well" because HE wishes it?

TL...I don't think the article said HE wishes it...he said that is what he believes. As broadband becomes more widespread, as well as DirectTV on cable systems, media will become much more on demand. I think that's his point...less of the physical media (of whatever type) and more on-demand media via PC or TV.
You are correct...I'm not getting rid of my DVD's either...I never got rid of my cassettes either, but I don't buy them anymore...I buy CD's. I think we're looking at a similar change of media delivery. The problem of course is going to be those areas that are not served by broadband.... |

Think about it. How long were Laser Discs around? (For those who don't remember, they were those LP like silver discs that held a movie)
Anyway, they came out some time in the 80's and were way better than VHS. (maybe even better than DVDs) If you cared about quality that was what you used. My local video video store even rented them. But, as soon as those cute little DVDs came along it was bye, bye laser disc. The same as CD's vs LPs. Gates is right on this one, but I don;t think anybody really knows what the next step is. |

You can't compare LaserDisc's with DVD's.
There were longevity, distribution, cost and equipment issues with LaserDisc. LaserDiscs were NEVER a mass-population item. DVD on the other hand was, and is, the fastest growing consumer electronics segment of all time. Like I said. You can't compare the two... TL |

I've come to believe that if Bill Gates says something, there is something in it for him. Somehow or another , he is going to profit from it. I've heard him referred to as the "Master of Self-Fulfilling Prophecies", and I'm not so sure I disagree :) He's up to something. He always is. TL |

Simdude90015, MacOS DVDs will be shut down via GATES' doomsday button too... since he sneaked in some code with the latest MS Office for Mac. And Microsoft engineers implanted the same backdoor into Linux during one of this year's "source code break-ins".

Why, I'm sure that someone out there has $5k sunk into their CD collection, so your "bone head" comment would hold true for Jobs too.
