Microsoft: Expect 1 Billion Windows PCs by 2010 | |

There are 600 million Windows PCs today, according to Microsoft. By 2010, there will be more than 1 billion of them, one company official said. Will Poole, the head of Microsoft's Windows client business, made these bold predictions here at the annual Microsoft worldwide partner conference in his keynote Monday morning. Poole said Microsoft expects the demand to come from enterprises in developed countries, all sizes of companies in developing markets and from OEMs that tailor Windows for specific markets. Many industry watchers have talked about the Windows desktop market as being a saturated one, with little potential for the huge unit and revenue growth of the past. But that's not the picture Microsoft's painting. | ||

I mean think about it. There is more PC in the business than home user PC.... I have a laptop at work, one PC for personnal use and another one for my kids... |

I think we should expect that. My guess is that they are considering that items like Media PCs, Tablet PCs, and even smaller Windows Embedded PC's (refridgerator doors, POS machines at restaurants, etc) will be part of the 1 billion PC's. And considering the number of outdated pc's out there that are yet to be replaced, and the old ones given away as hand me down's to the likes of chartible or other non-profit organizations make this totally conceivable.
Not to mention as technology grows, so does the dependency on computers. Businesses that are not in the TECH age right now will also be buying these Windows PC. Keep in mind that Windows XP has surpassed previous Windows sales, which is in the OEM category for record sales. |

I can see how the number is possible - we have 7 PC's at home of different types and two servers - one is a media aggregator, the other the DC. Most people we do work for have at least two and many have three or four - all in addition to business systems and systems at lake houses, etc... - heck even older parents have have two systems amongst many of them.
Among 5 people close to me, there are over 20 PC's I built myself. Mutliple system families are a lot more common that people realize. The need for information is that great. We seem to have become a professional services oriented economy - serving a world market that is rapidly growing its own use of systems for both business and personal use. I think the number is actually lower than what will emerge. We have seen marked increases in the number of systems we are fielding and of all types - with Tablet PC's and home MCE's being in the strongest demand. Once people see how they can be used - they seem never to be able to get enough - just like ourselves. |
