Microsoft Tries to Cache $1 Billion | |

Even companies with $56 billion in the bank have to do some belt tightening. The company in question is Microsoft, whose chief executive, Steve Ballmer, outlined the company's plans to cut $1 billion in costs in his annual e-mail message to employees. | ||

sodajerk - That's not a contradiction. In "Get the Facts" Microsoft is pointing out that in the long run Linux is not free, despite that it is commonly distributed for free.

Is there even a remote possibility of comments on a news story not degenerating into a win32 vs linux debate?
Um not that big adeal this statement. In 2 years there expenses have rose about 2 billion, which is alot, about 1/2 billion of that was expected ie.. fines court cases.etc. That's still alot of extra mola in a short amount of time and I'm sure investors can see this, so I'll he's saying is hey.. I'm gonna reign in the spending a bit. Just cause you have 56billion doesn't mean you should operate differently then if you had 1 billion. MS is not hemmorging money, they're just not growing like they used too.. and that's just maturely, same way dell et all is now growing like the past. Everyones grown up and the industries they play have all matured. As for what to do with the 56billion.. hell there's plenty of companies I'm sure they'll love to buy but can't cause people will scream antitrust or more cockmemey bs, so they are limited to 50mil co. here, 10mil company there.. etc. And stock by back are not 'desperate moves', in some one off cases they can be but for the most part they are normal ways to increase value to existing shareholders, a vast number of companies do this on a regular basis. |

Halcyon - Umm, now look who is being ridiculous.
"MS wants to point out how in the long term Linux may not be free, but they do not point out how migration only costs money once, and you have to pay for Windows forever." We've already gone through this. With MS you pay once for the software, get the updates for free. With Linux you get the software for free and pay annually for the updates. Either by paying Redhat service fees, or by hiring someone in-house to manage them. Either way, you pay. "They don't mention that all of the viruses and worms are on Windows." Why should they mention that when it's not true? "They don't mention how much administrators have to be paid to clean up the damages due to these viruses." No, Microsoft generally advocates using proactive virusscan and patch solutions instead as they reduce the cost tremendously. So in a program called "Get the facts", why exactly is it that you want Microsoft to spread anti-Microsoft lies? |

| Obtuse? Who's being fcking obtuse? Microsoft is clearly speaking out of both sides of its @ss. "We are facing strong competition, being undersold by free products.... These products aren't free, they cost more than Windows." That is a contradiction, and you are the one being obtuse. |

Yes, they are. Expenses have outgrown revenues for the past 3 years straight. Diminishing returns coupled with the desire to control all software will ultimately lead to severe hemmoraging. |

dude they have no desire to control all software.. more like have a significant market share in all primary business and consumer software. They don't want to own the world, they want to own like 1/3rd of it and lease it out to the rest of us.. :) ... like many companies dream.
