Apple makes Windows Rendezvous | |

Apple has opened up Rendezvous technology to Windows, Linux, Unix and Java developers. Rendezvous enables automatic activation of computer devices, and services on IP networks. It uses industry-standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically find each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers, and is referred to as zero-configuration networking. | ||

Halycon, Tivo, HP, Epson, Siebel, Sybase, and several others are using Rendezvous. I would expect others to do so in the Mac world.
Microsoft will continue to tie itself to UPnP probably despite the fact that after many years, and numerous companies allegedly supporting it, it sees very little implementation and use. And remember, Rendezvous, is simply Apple's name for Zero Conf... One would not need to use Apple's implementation to do the same thing or to achieve interoperability. | Parkker, no APIPA is a Microsoft proprietary attempt at circumventing DHCP. Zero Config is non-proprietary and involves not only allocating addresses, but also translating names to addresses, finding and broadcasting services, and allocating multicast addresses. |
