One of Microsoft's leading OEMs for the Tablet PCs has reaffirmed its faith in the concept, but warned that it may take "years" for it to catch on. Although Tablet OEMs have picked up some wins in education and vertical niches, it's failed to dent the notebook market. Acer says that it had hoped Tablets would make up 20 per cent of its notebooks sales, but they account for less than ten per cent to date. | ||

| Microsoft can't dictate pricing to OEMs. There is the cost of additional hardware and QA testing involved in producing the product. Until the material costs and process costs come down, there's little the OEMs can do the bring down the price without compromising quality in some way (most likely in display quality). |

Mr. Dee, I frequent Channel 9. I've seen the videos. The Tablet PC software was created by more than one guy. MS has had teams at MSR working on various parts of the software for years.
Those "few extras" cost real money. The Tablet PC requires more hardware and more stringent QA than the average notebook. A lot of work goes into processes that sandwich together the display components and digitizer without compromizing either the clarity of the display or the accuracy of the digitizer. This adds real cost. Plus Tablet PCs have more strict requirements for power management features and legacy-free. One of the videos from Channel 9 detailed the suggested process for digitizer calibration before shipping. There were something like 80 points of calibration involved for the recommended process. This alone adds time and tedium to the manufacturing process adds cost as a consequence. Give it time and material and process costs will come down. Soon, there will be Tablet PCs with higer resolution, higher dpi displays. This may push down the price of Tablets using current technology. |

I bought the Dell 8200 laptop that I am writing this comment on just when the Tablet's were coming out. Since then, a co-worker bought one and I had a chance to use it a few times. It is terrific! My next laptop will be a tablet PC.
One thing that would greatly increase sales of the tablets is simply getting them into retail stores for consumers to see and play with. That would go a long way to boost sales. |
