Many people using pirated copies of Windows XP will get no help from Microsoft to make their PC safer. The software giant has decided that a forthcoming update to XP will not work with the most widely pirated versions of its operating system. The upgrade, called Service Pack 2, closes security loopholes in XP and adds features that make it easier to keep machines safer from viruses. The software update is due to be released during the summer. | ||

I pay for software. Pirates don't so all they should get for free from Microsoft is lawsuits. I hate pirates and wish them all they lawsuits they can handle.
Now if only Longhorn is impossible to pirate or so easy to tracka pirated copies that they all land in jail. |

i wrote a comment on this subject before.
microsoft should absolutely make xp2 available to any running copy of windows xp as soon as possible to obtain "herd immunity". this is a biological concept of protecting a large population of individuals by immunizing as many of them as possible. it helps halt the spread of disease even in those that are not immunized. (it can even cause certain diseases to disappear entirely i.e. smallpox). that is, unless microsoft doesn’t really want to make all computer users safer ;). |

The hardcore pirates will likely just start using a non-blacklisted key, or find some other solution. Why give them free support? They will eventually find a way to upgrade anyway. If not, maybe they can add a few percentage points to the free OS market. I'm sure MS, Adobe, etc., wouldn't mind losing them. ;-)
The majority of the problem-computers will likely not be those used by pirates anyway. They will likely be those used by the average user who doesn't upgrade unless they buy a new computer with the new version preinstalled, and who doesn't download updates like SP 2 because they don't know how or don't care to do so. In short, the same people that currently have systems filled with spyware, viruses, trojans, etc. |
