IBM to launch Microsoft bypass | |

International Business Machines has raised the stakes in its battle with Microsoft by developing a software technology that would allow large corporations to bypass Microsoft operating systems and applications on PCs or handheld computers. This is the latest of increasingly aggressive moves by IBM, the world's largest computer company, to grab market share as global information technology markets strengthen following three years of downturn. It comes as Microsoft is under pressure from corporate customers unhappy with security issues in its software and the cost of licences. | ||

If this is anything like the stellar quality of their WebSphere product, we're in for good times -- that is, if you're a support tech. Better start brushin' up your resume, lots of money to be made here :)
Of course, no one has ever tried to bypass the client and go straight to server-only technologies *cough* Sun's NetPC *cough*, so it can't possibly fail, right? |

The posted article was a bit vague on what it is that IBM is actually fielding. An excerpt from this article sheds more light on their "new" products. "The new server-managed software package comes with the company's new Lotus Workplace software that handles e-mail, instant messaging, document management and team collaboration. The package is combined with additional IBM software that lets customers manage business applications and data on desktops, laptops and hand-helds, IBM said," https://www.mworld.com/m/m.w?lp=GetStory&NewsID=94866721 .
If this product, Lotus Workplace, resembles Lotus Notes in any way, they have a bomb waiting to explode in their shareholders' faces. Lotus Notes is the most awful program on the planet. Its user interface is crap. There is just no comparison between it and Exchange 2003. If Lotus Notes is forced on you and you also have Office 2003, get the Lotus Notes connector. At least then you can use Outlook 2003 to get you mail, etc. Another IBM turkey in the making! |
