As Microsoft focuses on merging its Web browser and operating system software, open-source competitors are mulling a proposal to join forces and beat the software giant to the punch. Representatives from two open-source foundations, Mozilla and Gnome, met last week to consider a joint course of action aimed at keeping their respective Web and desktop software products relevant once Microsoft releases the next major overhaul of its Windows operating system, known as Longhorn. | ||

| Merging there web browser with the operating system? Microsoft is going to do that? Wait a minute, wasnt there already a big lawsuit over not being able to remove the browser from Windows 98? About Microsoft intigrating to much software with the OS? Remember the idea of splitting the company into two parts? |

I find XUL powered by javascript hardly anything resembling to the power of XAML and C# and Avalon. Its simply a whole different universe. Good try though CS... What a great name! You must code c# files all the time right?

CloseStandards: Strange you should mention that particular page. XPCOM, huh? Wonder where the COM part of it came from? Or the QueryInterface method, mentioned several times on the page? Or the naming convention for interfaces? Maybe not stolen, but (l)inspired?
Seriously, just about every serious FOSS "desktop computing" project that I can think about begins with re-implementing COM. Whether it is Mozilla with XPCOM, GNOME with Bonobo or KDE with KOM/DCOP. I think even StarOffice used to have one. Maybe Microsoft did something right... |
