Microsoft's 'Longhorn' set for '04 release | |

U.S. software giant Microsoft will release a pilot version of its next-generation Windows software this year, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Known provisionally as "Longhorn," the forthcoming operating system upgrade will replace Windows XP, which debuted in October 2001. | ||

For all of you looking to see the new interface in action with this alpha show casing this summer, it's not happening. This is a more comprehensive showcasing of winFS, Indigo, Click Once, and Monda. The cool UI(which I've seen prelims of) at this point is a no go, microsoft doesn't want to have it's thunder stolen.
It will be cool to see more of .net 2.0 technologies (which is primarily what will be shown). From what I've read this is more likely to be just a partner, developer, and OEM version of the OS. It will be buggy but this alpha is not being designed for consumer testing at this point. |

#6, the people that actually know "Longhorn" as the codename for the next version of Windows won't be fooled; the name "Longhorn" is tied to the features that it will introduce, such as WinFS, Avalon, Indigo, etc.
It won't be called "Windows Longhorn," just as Windows XP wasn't called "Windows Whistler." |

Few people who care about technology look to the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal, and UPI as their primary sources for tech news, and after reading that article, I don't see this changing anytime soon - lol.
In fairly ambiguous language, it seems to be saying that something noteworthy will be released this year as a "pilot" version. I think they actually wanted to say "beta," but didn't know the right word. Since alphas have already been distributed, they must be saying that it will definitely go to beta before the end of 2004. I wasn't able to access the Wall Street Journal article on which the Washington Times story was based, but nothing I see in the Times seems to contradict the general expectation (repeated in the article) that the final version of Longhorn will be released in 2006. |

(#11) Just for the record, the only inference I was drawing was that since alpha builds are yawn-yawn, anything heralded as even slightly newsworthy must be a progression to beta. If that's not the case, then this "news story" is even more lame than it seemed. Since you seem to be much more in tune with the release schedule, I'll be glad to trust your judgement that the upcoming pre-year-end release will be just another alpha.
