Few people who care about technology look to the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal, and UPI as their primary sources for tech news, and after reading that article, I don't see this changing anytime soon - lol.
In fairly ambiguous language, it seems to be saying that something noteworthy will be released this year as a "pilot" version. I think they actually wanted to say "beta," but didn't know the right word. Since alphas have already been distributed, they must be saying that it will definitely go to beta before the end of 2004.
I wasn't able to access the Wall Street Journal article on which the Washington Times story was based, but nothing I see in the Times seems to contradict the general expectation (repeated in the article) that the final version of Longhorn will be released in 2006.
