Microsoft gave a rare public demonstration of its eagerly awaited, security-enhanced Windows XP Service Pack 2 at the XChange Solution Provider conference in Nashville, Tenn. In an XChange world premiere event before several hundred solution providers, Microsoft Technology Specialist Bill Tomlinson touted the security features of the Windows XP Service Pack 2, which features an array of robust new security capabilities and an improved firewall. | ||

| #2 No idea, I don't think there are any technical reasons for not including NX for Win2K, but perhaps it's an incentive to get you to upgrade. I'd be suprised if they don't make it available for Win2K though. |

| #6 Most businesses run Windows 2000, not XP! That's why this security feature should be made available for Windows 2000. Like I said, I'll be suprised if they don't release this for Win2K. |

"Everytime a company adds a new feature to their current Operating System it should be added to their previous OS even if it is almost 5 years old." That's up to the company! And Microsoft have always proudly boasted about the length of time that they supports their OS for. They did make sure that IE6 and WMP9 etc etc would still work on Windows 98 and I think even YOU will agree that those are slightly larger features than including support for execution protection. I think NX comes under "security feature" more than it does under "oobe enhancement feature for which we are going to charge for"! Given how serious Microsoft are, apparently, about security, surely it would only make sense for them to release a "security feature" for an operating system that is in use by most businesses. Given that Longhorn isn't going to be released until at least 2006? this means that those businesses are going to continue to use Windows 2000 until then, after all, as you pointed out, some businesses are still using NT, although I'm sure that most of these are NT Servers not Workstations. Are you saying that it is unlikely for businesses to upgrade their computers in that time? "Chris, what OS do you run?" At work we have Windows 2000 on our desktops but we have fairly much every OS around the place doing different bits and pieces. Most of my development work is on Win2K and Solaris. At home I run WinXP and Linux. Given that I'm unlikely to be purchasing any 64-bit CPU any time soon I personally don't require this patch, but I'm sure many others may. After all, AMD are pushing their 64bit CPU's a fair bit at the moment! |
