I can answer #2, Techgeek.
NT currently supports .CMD scripts as well as scripting via the Windows Scripting Host. For Longhorn, however, Microsoft will include a new .NET-based commandline called the Microsoft Shell (MSH). MSH will have its own standard (verb/noun) command syntax, but will allso include aliases for Unix and DOS/CMD for commands that have equivalents. For example: The MSH command, "get/children" has the Unix alias "ls" and the DOS/CMD alias "dir". The commands in MSH are .NET dlls called cmdlets (commandlets). MSH will ship with several cmdlets, and ISVs and end-users can also add their own. Users can also add their own custom command aliases. The cmdlets can be pipelined to create custom functionality, and MSH passes around .NET objects, so you can take advantage of the properties and metadata inherent to each object. The MMC will also support cmdlets as snap-ins, and output MSH script, so users new to MSH can see how the output changes as they make point/click changes in the MMC. They can also copy/paste the code from the MMC and (with adequate permissions) push that code out to the computers on the network to quickly make widespread changes. http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/PDC/4118/ARC334.ppt |

Ok, a few questions I can think of.
With Longhorn being the first Client with .netFX/WinFX fully embedded. What is MS planning to do for the next 2 years to promote the framework on the Client?? In effect now as a developer I must plan that the system I write too doesn't have .netFX. And it appears that everything to install it is to prevent it from being installed. XP sp1 has it on CD. while you can get it on windows update. it is a HUGE download. On the CD it is a totally different install from the SP install. From reading on SP2 it doesn't sound plans for the SP picture is changeing much. I hope that the picture with whidbey and .netFX 2.0 leads to work at promotion of the framework at the Client level. (even if that mean distribution of the java runtime to satisfy sun as long as the user has the Option to remove it) 2nd question. With Win 2k3 being the first Server with .netFX ebedded, we can plan for Longhorn servers but there appears to be a Huge amount of changes coming. Any chance to hear thoughts of the enterprise level support in WinFX, Avalon, WinFS, and Indigo. or at least a visionary overview of why and how it will improve my business. (thinking along the lines of how MS plans to sell it to each of its other units) 3rd Quesion or perhaps just a suggestion. There are many many multicultural families, not to mention that there are several excellent ways to learning a new language. Currently the Multilingual User Interface is only available with an open license or above. I hope that with Longhorn a personal license on a per language basis can be implemented with MUI. For example I need English and Russian. more maybe later. El |

Hi, I just want to ask about WinPE(windows pre-installation environment)
This windows version is actually made available for enterpeise customers but many of us think that it should be let available to the public, just like it happened with services for Unix 3.5. WinPE is usefull for creating boot cds. Anothewr question, has Microsoft planned to create Live Windows Cds like Linux Knoppix, etc., they will be really usefull for remote amnagement from within any point with a NIC. Diwik |

When the Linux kernel had to be updated every couple of weeks to deal with just security bugs did you ....
Roll out another 'bug fix' with several hidden security updates included? |

Ahhh. Sounds exactly like RedHat. An example is this patch: This should be good. I look forward to finding out how Red Hat can hide something in plain sight. It says it is just fixing CAN-2004-0077. But no .... look in the fine print, and you see that it is actually fixing 3 bugs: Correct 1 security update and 2 bugs. Let's look at that list again: Bugs fixed: (see bugzilla for more information) 112891 - OOM killer strikes with lots of free swap space 113517 - RHEL 3.0 smp hang using prctl( PR_SET_PDEATHSIG 115820 - CAN-2004-0077 Linux kernel do_mremap VMA limit local privilege escalation Yep, one security update. The one security fix is not hidden from view. Two bug fixes listed are in plain view. [sarcasm]You were right, they hid the security update from us, no I mean the bug fixes were hidden from us (in plain sight).[/sarcasm] You did a pretty good job showing us that Red Hat discloses what issues will be fixed when they issue a patch. Unfortunately for you, I claimed that Microsoft doesn't necessarily do this. Provide me with a link where Microsoft shows you what bugs/issues are fixed by moving from IE 5.X to IE 6.X. |
