Yahoo! and Microsoft are giving serious thought to the idea of e-mail "postage" that costs senders a small fee, company officials said. The admissions come in the wake of Microsoft founder Bill Gates' January comments in Davos, Switzerland suggesting the spam problem will be defeated by a number of different solutions, but "in the long run, the monetary method will be dominant." | ||

I can't say this loud enough. This is the STUPIDIST idea anyone has ever come up with.
Make the innocent pay for the Spammers? And who gets the Penny ? There are two steps that need to be taken to cure this problem: 1. We need a law with TEETH, not this corporate-friendly Bovine-Residue that they past off as a SPAM Law. It has to have OPT-IN provisions. Period. It has to have stiff fines. Period. 2. For those open-relays and other offshore servers this crap is coming from, someone is hosting these things. We find out who the host is, and block their IP's from entering the US. If that doesn't work, we block off the country it's coming from. Yeah, I know that's a bit in conflict with my statement above concerning the innocent, but these governments KNOW this is coming from their shores and if they don't want to act like good netizens, then it's time to pressure them. | ok, i agree that systems like goodmail.com is a bad route. I thought gates/others were discussing a system where any mail that a reciever identified as "spam" would cause a charge to be incurred by the sender. Now, I'm not sure I'm a fan of that system either... but it sounds better than goodmail. |
