CDRLabs.com has taken a look at Lite-On's 8x dual format DVD writer, the LDW-811S and posted an in-depth review of the drive. Here's just a snippet:
It shouldn't be surprising that what the LDW-811S does best is write DVD's. While not as fast as the drives from Nu Tech and Plextor, its 8x DVD+R writing speeds allowed it to write 4GB of data in a little more than 8 minutes. Unlike Sony's new DVD±RW, the LDW-811S also has the ability to write to select 4x DVD+R media at 8x. The LDW-811S was also pretty quick when writing to other types of recordable DVD media. In fact, if the rumors are true, the LDW-811S will be even faster when Lite-On adds support for 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW writing speeds.

The drive has many of the features we've come to expect from Lite-On including their SMART-BURN, SMART-X and Vibration Absorber System (or VAS) technologies. Like most DVD writers, the LDW-811S is lacking support for the Mt. Rainier format. However, it has a good number of writing and rewriting speeds to choose from as well as the ability to set the book type of DVD+R/RW media.
