A few thoughts...
Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson certainly thought it was possible to measure marketshare. If it were an impossible thing, then nobody can prove Microsoft is/was a monopoly and we call all go on with our lives without any more public or private anti trust cases.
Obviously, within a reasonable tolerance level, there are ways that are deemed reliable for determining marketshare.
Even with all the people out there, who are hacking their IE to appear as Konquerer on Linux, I think Google is pretty close.
