HP's move to release an own-branded digital-music player based on Apple's iPod – and to ship iTunes pre-installed on all HP PCs – has angered Microsoft. General manager of Microsoft's Windows digital media division David Fester has suggested that iTunes' emerging dominance would be bad for consumers, because it would limit them to the iPod. He told journalists at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas: "Windows is about choice - you can mix and match software and music player stuff. We believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services."

I think if they support WMA on the iPod, that's pretty fair. That may actually help the competitors to iTunes, assuming that no WMA files are available through iTMS.
Actually, considering just the text of the quote given, I'm not really sure that it's a dig at HP or Apple. You can mix and match... that has always been the case with Windows, and it will also be the case when iTunes comes preinstalled on HP machines.

bwhite2323 - "Wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft felt that choice would be a good thing for its other products, say, basic operating systems? "
You can't run Linux?

"Windows is about choice - ..."
Does anyone else see the irony in this statement, or is it just me?

Each to their own - but its more likely the "anger" side of Microsoft is just being jealous of a product doing well and that more customers are going to take notice of and use iTunes in the future instead of WMP, but wasn't Microsoft's view always that users are clever enough to decide which is best for them anyway? So why complain if your product is supposedly better. It just looks like they don't like the fact that iTunes will show up on desktops in place of WMP to me. They really need to look at themselves before they start berating others on "choice".

#19 - Well they can be disabled in services, but yeah it was an annoyance, hopefully future versions will improve the performance problems of the Windows release.

I'm not sure what it means, but for you OS X users out there, check the resources of the iTunes application. There are icons for WMA and OGG.

I think WMA support would be far more useful than Ogg.

This whole thing is absolutely hilarious. To see MS scream "iTunes' emerging dominance would be bad for consumers" is so hipocritical that it's beyond words.

It's Apple made hardware and Apple made software that works with the ipod - why do they have to open it up to all the other MP3 players? The only thing its lacking is WMP support, something that isn't actually causing much of a problem in sales terms and sure as hell doesn't bother me one bit but something that will more than likely come along in the future. It's the software that the iPod runs with, they are not stopping people use other music players are they, you don't have to use itunes to listen to your music, you just need to use it for transferring your music to your ipod, I don't have a problem with that as I don't have to use iTunes for anything else if i don't want to.
It seems this thread is getting a bit pathetic, very similar to the Microsoft comment.

Byron - "It seems this thread is getting a bit pathetic, very similar to the Microsoft comment. "
It's nice to see that we will no longer have to read criticism of Microsoft from the Mac advocates, because they've discredited themselves.
Now back to the Linux vs. Windows bash sessions!

#39 - I don't remember me complaining about that though, I'm just finding it funny that Microsoft talks about another company "limiting" choice. Pot calling the kettle black and all. I'd much prefer the iPod could be used in other music playing software, fact is its Hardware designed by a company to use the software that came with it. When you buy new hardware, most people tend to make use of the software that is required for it.
It's just very easy to cringe when you see/hear the words "choice" and "Microsoft" in the same sentence.

It's also easy to accept stereotypes and be prejudiced. I guess that makes everything OK.
