Microsoft to beta test security updates on CD | |

Microsoft is considering a release of security updates on CD for users of its older operating systems who lack broadband connections to the Internet, according to an email sent to prospective beta testers on this week. The email invites beta testers who are using Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium to join a test of a CD that will include aa pertinent critical security patches found on the WindowsUpdate website. | ||

I was just thinking about something like this today, but not for older systems.
With Windows XP requiring in excess of 63 updates (many, many more if you do not have SP1 installed), it's gotten to the point where those without Internet Access or on Dial-up are being put in an impossible position. What I would like to see is a yearly CD-based subscription for less than $50 a year that would provide a monthly CD that, when inserted, would act _exactly_ like Windows Update. You put it in, it autoruns, scans your system, and presents the updates you need. I have absolutely no doubt that it can be done, and done fairly easily. This would also be a boon for travelling service Tech's and other support personel. BTW... Yes, that number 63 is accurate. That is how many updates I have had to apply from Windows Update since installing XP the last time. Without having SP1 installed, the list is well over 100. I went to the installation history and counted them :) TL |

XP Update CD is currently in beta. CD updates will likely be quarterly (just guessing).
The latest SP and updates are included along with an option that checks your firewall and auto-update settings and turns them on if requested. There's also an option to check the live WU site for more recent updates. Neowin had some pics a few weeks ago. |
