While iTunes' main purpose is let people buy music online and play songs stored on their PC, the software also includes a feature that allows customers to listen to songs stored on another PC on their local network. Apple's software makes no permanent copy of the song, but the new MyTunes software captures that "stream" of music, making a copy that can be burned to a CD, uploaded to the Net or streamed to another PC. "iTunes does not allow you to save this music to your hard drive," MyTunes' creator, Bill Zeller, said on his Web site. "MyTunes lifts this restriction by allowing you to save music from other computers to your hard drive." | ||

Are you guys having server problems or provider problems?
For the last few weeks loading up the site, and particularly posting replies, has become terribly slow at times. It's happened from all my sites on many different computers, so it's not on my end. TL |

becker, no, it's not. News.com got the story very wrong. MyTunes allows other users to directly pull the tracks from other users computers, not record the streams in progress. Therefore, tracks protected with FairPlay, once transfered, are not activated for the new computer. However, unprotected mp3s, AAc files, etc... can be transferred whole and intact.
Could this be a problem? Sure, but this is NOT a flaw in Apple's copy protection system. Check it out for yourself. This post was edited by sodajerk on Monday, November 17, 2003 at 13:24. |
