Autumn brings two reasons to celebrate Microsoft® Publisher: It marks the 10th anniversary of the Microsoft Office desktop publishing solution and the release of Microsoft Publisher Deluxe with Photo Editing version 2002. Publisher Deluxe gives customers all the features of Publisher 2002, plus the photo-editing technology of Microsoft Picture It!® Photo 2002. Designed specifically for small-business users who do not have training in desktop publishing, Publisher combines design and layout tools to help users set up the most common types of sales, marketing and communications documents, including brochures and newsletters, as well as assist them in designing a Web site. The Publisher Task Pane makes it easy for users to modify design elements, including Color Schemes and Fonts Schemes. | ||

| I guess that depends on what your definition of "good" is. Publisher is great for home users that want to make cards, calendars, fliers and the like. It doesn't have the expert features that you have in Pagemaker or Quark etc... Its a great program if what you want to do is just throw something together quickly and have it look nice. The others are capable of a lot more but require a lot more effort to learn. |

Whatever. That is a blatant lie. Put a new user in front of Publisher and put a new user in front of Pagemaker and see which one wins out as easier to use. They serve two totally different audiences.
If you are familiar with Adobe interfaces then you might be able to pick up on things quicker. But if you are familiar with Microsofts interfaces then Publisher will be easier to use (read Word). I personally use inDesign and before that used Pagemaker. But lets be honest Publisher is a lot easier to get started with than any Adobe product. If there is one thing MS is good about its user friendliness. Publisher is for your lower end user. If you need something more advanced then you have a slew of options. If you use photoshop and more specifically illustrator get inDesign. It is awesome. Most newspapers use Quark so use that if you are looking at getting started in the Print Industry. #18 Have you even used Publisher 2002? My guess is no. So why don't you do everyone a favor and shut up if you haven't even used the product in question. To educate you here is where you can order a Publisher 2002 Deluxe Trial CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/publisher/evaluation/trial.htm In addition since you are obviously not familiar with the product at all check out: http://www.microsoft.com/office/publisher/evaluation/indepth/guide.htm I gather from your comments that you aren't the brightest chap so why don't you check out this webpage that has pretty pictures on it detailing features found in Publisher 2002: http://www.microsoft.com/office/publisher/evaluation/tour/default.htm As far as commercial printing goes don't you think it rather strange that MS would include this option in the program: http://www.microsoft.com/office/publisher/evaluation/tour/page4.htm (Scroll down to the last image) You can also print separations within the program which everyone accepts. Let's just calm down and realize something - Publisher is cheap, small scale, and for small business with small budgets and time to "figure it out". Quark, inDesign, etc are expensive, large scale, for professionals with large budgets who have already "figured it out". Well Well....
Doesn't take much to start a simple argument over a $99 piece of software, now does it? :-). As a prepress operator myself, I have found Microsoft Publisher to be very cost effective for my business. I have attracted numerous customers in the SOHO market that wouldn't normally be using the high end products available from Qark, Adobe and Corel. I keep track of (in a marketing form report) of projects created by each software project that I send through the rips or even to the digital copiers. In the SOHO market alone, Publisher has been 15% of my over all sales between my two print shops ($600,000 a year combined total sales). The remainder of the money is divided between 3 Adobe products (already mentioned here), 1 Quark product, and 2 Corel products. While Publisher is the lowest margin, it's been one of the easiest to prepare (so long as the customer uses Pack and Go). Not to mention the Word of Mouth that I have received from the SOHO customers that I have. Publisher 2002 has added improved font licensing, 12 spots colors, process colors plus cmyk, updated pantone, new "Save As" options, 100% customizable interface, new Office Art, new improved mail merge feature which has made the ability to produce numbered raffle tickets much easier, 800mb of Clipart (on the Office XP media CD that is included), Word import feature, headers and footers, VBA/Macros with Add-Ins (I have created an excellent addin that you can use to Find and Replace colors in an entire publication (up to 2gb in size), Publisher 2002 does support paragragh and character styles (unlike what was told in this forum), PrePress Printer location available from the tool bar, which takes you to: http://microsoft.saltmine.com/publisher/pspp/list/usersearchcriteria.asp and of course, many more items to mention...and not enough time :-) Publisher is very intuitive, and compliments the remainder of the Office line very well. SOHO customers will find this very beneficial because the interface and menu commands are shared across the entire Office line..which is very consistent. I have been using Publisher 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 97, 98, 2000 and now 2002 in my print shop for years (as well as Pagemaker, InDesign, Quark, CorelDraw! and even a Serif product), and has suited myself, as well as the thousands of other printers that are using Publisher. Thanks KvalCom. Thats really interesting. You guys do $600,000 a year? I am impressed. Is that average for a Printshop?
I never said Publisher is for Pro's. Again its an entrylevel product geared toward a completely different audience. Thats why people still buy Paint Shop Pro and MS PhotoDraw. . . They are easier to use for non professional type people. #21 You purport to be a professional but I sincerely doubt that judging by your comments. Irregardless you need to chill out a little bit. And if you really do have 15 years of experience in the "industry" and actually have customers, I feel real sorry for them. You must be a real pain to work with. And just so I can set the record straight I wasn't born in a cave, or raised on piss. But I am blind as a bat so you got 1 out of 3 correct. Way to go! You are right about something. RA |

| Jeez I never said that all professionals drop your quark and indesign and go get Publisher! Publisher is great though for doing quick and dirty stuff. Chill out sheesh. |
