In late September 2003, the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) in Washington issued a new report that detailed its "findings" on the state of Internet security. The panel of experts who authored the paper agreed that the Internet security problems faced by corporations, consumers, and government users could not be solved unless these groups made a concerted effort to move away from Microsoft Windows and other Microsoft products. In their opinion, the lack of diversity in computing platforms has made it easy for virus writers and hackers to target systems based on the Windows platform. | ||

Really? I wasn't aware that Windows would do that. Would you care to explain how? I'd love to reproduce your claim on my XP desktop. "Plus, system level stuff is locked away from user accounts so that even if a retard clicked on an email virus it wouldn't do anything but wipe that user's account." Oh, that's such a relief. A virus under Linux is going to save the OS installation which takes two hours to reproduce, but is going to let my financial data, letters, resumes, and other documents that took years and years to produce be utterly destroyed. That makes the end user feel so much better. Thank you for your wonderful thoughtfulness on this matter! JWM - I didn't say that, and neither did this article.
Free market competition is what placed Microsoft in the dominant role in the industry. Free market competition is also what will force Microsoft into a lesser role. Free markets are not defined as government regulations that exclude a successful competitor from the market. That's protectionism, which is what the CCIA is advocating both in it's pursual of many of the DOJ antitrust claims, but also in this ridiculous claim of a monoculture being bad. The only way that a consumer can benefit from free market competition is if all competitors are allowed to compete. |

#5 How many Linux users use Pine as their email client? Pine has always had little shitty about it - at uni we used to send emails around with escape codes in the subject line as all the students using Pine would have their whole terminal buggered up as soon as they opened up Pine - those students who used elm or one of the other 20 or so email clients didn't have this problem. So whereas you can target a Windows machine and fairly much assume that the user will be either using Outlook or OE (sure there will be a few using Eudora etc), the same is not true when targetting a Linux machine.

When will people realise that Linux has just as many (remotely exploitable or otherwise) vulnerabilities than windows, its just that the windows ones are <i> more widely exploited </i> than *nix ones. Reason of course being that MS own over 90% of the OS market............
If I had the time Id provide links but I suggest you skeptics to some googling to realise the error in your ways.......... Anyone know the percentage of *nix servers out there that are rooted???? I LMAO. Root kits for *nix have been around far longer than any MS ones.....but Im not saying there arent root kits for Windows......... So whats more vulnerable? What? Windows just because its more widely used? Everyone knows MS need to tighten there security, but it s aproblem that every OS faces. You people are too keen to jump on the 'lets bag MS bandwagon'.......I hate bandwagons. |

X - Nothing wrong with having diversity in the server room, but do it for the right reasons. Do it because the product works well as a solution to the problem.
That's not what the CCIA is arguing. They're trying to apply a biology argument towards computers, which is a terrible analogy and they really have to strain to make it fit. You may not believe this, but companies are willing to lie, steal, cheat and publish incredibly biased articles about their competitors in order to sell product. That's what the CCIA did here. kabuki - I don't care who uses pine. Although for the record, I used to use pine years ago. I was responding to a claim that this could never happen on Linux/Unix/OSX because it's morally superior. That claim is false. The fact is, it can happen, and it has happened.
