Microsoft Corp. began the systematic shutdown of its online chat rooms on Tuesday, silencing a once boisterous forum for oddball rants and political observations darkened by spammers and sex predators. Last month, the world's largest software company stunned the industry and the millions who use its chat rooms by announcing its was closing MSN chat in 28 countries, saying it had become a haven for peddlers of junk "spam" e-mail and paedophiles. | ||

And how is IM any less dangerous for pedophiliac stalking? Hell, most would agree it's more so because it's more private and a record is not necessarily preserved. Spam can be relayed through IM as well.

Phaedrus, of course the reasons behind it and what they said and did is significant. I didn't argue that they should have chat or that they need to. But if the rationale is: it's old tech, it sucks, it's costly but irrelevent... Why didn't they say so?
Isn't it hypocrisy to say: we are doing this for the social and moral benefit of the world, not for financial or technological reasons? Isn't it dangerous, and may I add, complete bullsh!t to claim that IM is safer than chat rooms in regards to spam, porn, and pedaphilia? It's not clear that they said that. What they said was that because of porn, pedophiles and other noxious substances it's just not worth running this financially so we're shutting it down. I don't know, do IM allow you to just randomally connect with people and talk? I always thought you generally had to know someone's IM id and connect to them specifically. If you're talking about some sort of IM chat room, well then that's a chat room not IM. |
