#2: I have a 3yo son and a 7mo daughter, believe me, I hate kiddie porn as much as the next father, but I just question the need for a "massive database of illegal material" or whatever to search on. Why do you need to amass tons of kiddie porn in order to fight it?
It just sounded fishy. It's like those stories you hear every now and then about cops who are on "stake out" or "investigations" who go and spend thousands of tax-payer dollars a the local t*tty bar or who hire prostitutes so they can "examine the criminal mind" or some other such BS. I don' t know about you, but I don't want a massive database of kiddie porn ANYWHERE, let alone at the neighborhood police station. This post was edited by daz on Friday, October 10, 2003 at 01:06. |

#4, they want to be able to automate as much of it as possible. This software is supposed to eliminate the needs for officers or support staff to manually categorize the images during an investigation and can free them up to do other work. Given the "fears" you mentioned this should help prevent what your afraid off... cops having to look at kiddie porn... and i'm sure they'll be greatful for not having to as well. :) This post was edited by astorrs on Friday, October 10, 2003 at 03:23. |

The article explains the purpose. By putting all of the pictures into one database, and then tracking case numbers against them, they can track how the pictures were distributed, and in so doing identify the "ring" and locate other members.
Right now they're doing it all manually, but the police officer who made the request thought it'd be better with software because he was getting tired of having nightmares because of having to view all this stuff over and over again. I think this is great. |
