#11, no, if you are worried about downtime, then there are several things you can do.
You can run a backup, so when you are rebooting one, the other takes over, or you can do it from a remote admin session over the weekend when no one is there. And there are other things you can do too. |

If you are running a Windows NT/2k shop, and you CAN'T afford even 10 minutes of downtime in the middle of the night for maintainance rebooting, then you CAN aford to have failover servers. If you are too poor to afford a failover server or servers, then you probably don't have such a high profile site that anyone would notice a 10 minute reboot.
I might also add, that those of us who don't have access to NT/2k's source code don't know why the OS thinks it needs to reboot. I am of the opinion personally that many reboots (oops, I changed my IP address) should not be required. Windows 2000 did away with many of the events that required reboots in NT 4. Still, if you haven't seen the code, I don't think you are all too qualified to make statements about it. As a final note, according to the rumors I've heard "Blackcomb" will be .NET based and will be designed in such a way that replacing core OS components will not require reboots (much the way Linux works if I understand correctly). |

#15 makes a good point.. if you can afford to reboot a server once\twice a week then you dont have the correct solution in place.
MS is about 85% justified in my opinion. They could do a better job with there patch releases.. not to mention the few occations were centain things slipped though qa. It happens to everyone.. not just ms. In the last 6mo. they have gotten ALOT better at this, in fact they have the best organized patch\info site then any other major vendor. But like MS said, and we all know.. 85% of the problem is because of improper action or lazyness\costcutting at the corporate it level. I speed at a minimun 1 hour a day reviewing security issues for our production environment, there is nothing more important to me, other then keeping eveything running :) The difference is that my employeer knows the value of letting me read web sites half the day...as 90% of it is admin\security\etc related and keeps us uptodate. Lol the other 10% is half-life related of course :) |
