New Windows virus may hit soon | |

It’s going to be another patch race. A virus or worm that exploits newly revealed vulnerabilities in the current versions of Windows could emerge fairly soon, security experts say, in part because the vulnerabilities are very similar to the flaws exploited by the MSBlast worm. “This is essentially the same type of vulnerability,” said Alfred Huger, senior director of engineering at Symantec Security Response. “We’re likely to see them (new viruses) in the near future.” Code that exploits the vulnerability is already being exchanged between researchers, he said. A new virus could come out in the next few days, he added, if not sooner. Robin Matlock, vice president of marketing at Network Associates, speculated that an exploit might take a few weeks. Still, “the gap between vulnerabilities and exploits is shrinking dramatically,” she said. | ||

Hmm.. these vulnerabilities don't sound as radicaly dangerous as the RPC/DCOM 'hole' that made MSBlast/Sobig possible. Got my systems patched on time though.

#3, exactly. The worst kind of virus are the ones that are scripted in a web page. You never know who has some malicious code in their source and if you hit their page, whammo.
Those are the worst. Unexpected and vile. Attachments can be dealt with, you just block them and that's the end of that; but a page crafted (or hijacked) to that end is something far more devious. |

Maybe I'm just naive but doesn't it seem like these "researchers" are doing a lot more than just finding vulnerabilities and documenting them? Does it really require that, when a hole is found, they write a complete exploit and send it out to everyone?
I mean, there has got to be an aweful lot of security researchers out there, compared to real virus/worm writers (not script kiddies), so if you think about the man-hours required to get from research to exploit, wouldn't it seem that to take the malicious virus community longer? I agree, Foxbat, why not have a couple rogue programmers releasing new virii??? If it keeps you in business... |

| IronCladLou - These "researchers" think that the only way people will learn lessons is if they feel financial pain. Thus they send out exploits and encourage 18 year old kids to turn them into viruses. |
