Microsoft: Asia not playing fair over OS | |

A plan by Japan, China and South Korea to develop an operating system alternative to Microsoft's Windows software could raise concerns over fair competition, Microsoft said Friday. Japan, the world's second-largest economy, made a proposal at an Asian economic summit this week to build an inexpensive and trustworthy open-source operating system that would be based on a system such as Linux, which can be copied and modified freely. "We'd like to see the market decide who the winners are in the software industry," said Tom Robertson, Microsoft's Tokyo-based director for government affairs in Asia. Microsoft prefers competition between software applications to be determined in the free markets rather than by government agencies. "Governments should not be in the position to decide who the winners are," Robertson said. | ||

I'm not sure how this is even competition or playing at all?!? Governments mandating using their own operating system sure sounds horribly stupid if you ask me. They will spend millions of dollars/yen/yaun/won and learn that virus and worm writters like to do things that have the most effect. That's why they write for MS platforms because of the huge numbers. Why write for the Mac or Linux when it's 1/1000th of the numbers. But once they learn they can take down entire governments with a single worm on their version of Linux it should get interesting.
Don't forget to mention the fact that other foreign countries won't be able to do something as simple as forward a Word document without having to reformat, edit, and save it on Linux as converters on Linux still have a ways to go. Things they take for granted today that took MS 25 years to come up with as "standard" sure will become a pain for them all over again. It seems like a huge step backwards if you ask me, these same organizations (China and South Korea) use horribly outdated technology, and now want to write their own technology. As for being traded freely, I guess we get to see what SCO has to say about that. |

I hope that these governments develop an OS that is worth a flip. Then, we can pirate from them like they have been doing to us for decades.
Not long ago, I had the occasion to be in Korea. There, they have "software" shops in every town and village. Only, don't expect to find legitimate software for sale anywhere. Instead, expect to pay 1/10 to 1/100th the price of the actual cost of legitemate software. They have managed to copy with a certain amount of likeness even the halograph on the CDs! And by the way, Microsoft is just one of the targets. Pick yourself up some IBM Webshere - it retails for around $40,000 - for a hundred or so! Piracy approaches 100% in the orient. They're a bunch of thieves. The chance of them having the creativity to put out a world class operatingy system is 0%. |

This simply cannot be possible -- if you consider the Findings of Fact from Microsoft's legal battles actually factual. After all, didn't the judge rule that Linux is not a competitor to Microsoft??? Hmmm. Perhaps some humble pie should be served.
On the otherhand, Microsoft has been steadily increasing their licensing revenues and severly restricting licensing rights, so it should not be a suprise to Microsoft that there is a ground-swell of governments and users considering supporting Linux. If Microsoft wants to get rid of these options, then they better review their licenses and licensing structures to take away the financial incentives to fund their competitors. |

This logical construct is known as a tautology, it is akin to writing "We are in a drought. As long as it doesn't rain, we will continue to be in a drought." If you don't understand what I mean, go look it up. |

gg - A tautology is a vacuous statement because it's true no matter how it is evaluated.
"You hear enough people saying 'I only buy american cars' ... so what's wrong with a country's government trying to support its own country's industry? ;) " Yet Toyota is the best selling car company in America, proving this statement false. "You're reaching conclusions without any evidence. " He's just following the example promoted by the Linux zealots. :( |
