Dell, Sony to launch Media Center PCs | |

Dell and Sony are both expected to launch their first Media Center PCs this fall, sources familiar with the companies' plans told CNET News.com. The two companies did not offer computers using the initial version of the Windows XP Media Center operating system, but are expected to enter the market once Microsoft introduces a new version of the operating system later this month. Microsoft has scheduled events across the United States on Sept. 30 to unveil the next version of Media Center, code-named Harmony. | ||

Where are the new features for this new version of Media Center? Anyone find any details?
BTW... a new version means get ready for a firesale by ViewSonic, etc (the lesser marketed media center builders). Pick up a v1 on the cheap. |

| JWM, Media Center PC's are full fledged PC's, which people use as PC's, but they have addtional media funtionality not present on other PC's. If I were to get a media center pc, Linux would be of no use to me. |

If you are getting a PC, which performans all PC functions, which also performs specialized functions, you aren't buying a new computer just to get software. IIRC, Microsoft will only sell Windows XP Media Center Edition on Media Center PCs, to ensure guaranteed level of hardware quality. You may not agree with that, and I don't know that I do either, but so far as I am aware, that is their rationale.
As for your cheaper comment, you could argue that something else is cheaper than Windows (Media Center Edition or not), so I don't see the point of that comment. |

| I personally love haivng a reader for every portable storage medium built-in to my computer, as well ad a nice CD-RW, DVD-RW, nice and big harddrive, decent video card, a TV Tuner, and some nice software to put it all together.... but that's just me. |
