Apple: Dual-2GHz G5 to reach education buyers first | |

While Apple may be on track to ship the dual-2GHz Power Mac G5 this month, the first supplies will reach education buyers, the company said. In a "Power Mac G5 Distribution Update" provided to resellers last week, Apple echoed its earlier press release in saying that the dual-2GHz Power Mac G5 will ship later in August. However, the first available models won't necessarily reach those who ordered the G5 first, the company said. "The initial supply of dual processor G5s will be allocated primarily to education orders so we can meet back to school deadlines," Apple said. "Our innovative products often require time to ramp to full production quantities." | ||

Interesting...What's Apple's strategy here?
Is this aimed at primilarily at holding off Dell? With the economy the way it is, do you think that schools will be laying out this kind of dough? |

Well, if they're getting them, they must be. I think this has less to do with Dell (although this is their competition in many respects and what they'll be gauged against) but rather to do with establishing and defining a foothold in the high-end education/scientific and computational/high-end media workstation market. I doubt many G5s are going to elementary schools. Maybe a few high schools with good media offerings. But primarily, I bet these G5s are going to higher-ed science, media, and comp sci departments at universities. This follows on the development of a more focused and larger enterprise sales group at Apple. This is also a good entry point because you are talking about large and sophisticated networks but ones with a great deal of control. Apple can work out a lot of issues of multi-environment networks and many other enterprise-class issues while doing so hand in hand with the academic field/market. Expect this to be followed by a bigger push with the XServe and related server products when an impending update hits the streets in a month or two. |
