But it really gets rolling when you're expected to run test versions of software that don't have all their bugs worked out — "eating your own dogfood," in Microsoft parlance. | ||

| There is one situation where they don't eat their own dogfood - the hardware division (specifically the mouse) does not yet support Windows 2003. After more than a year in beta and approaching six months of production, they still do not have an Intellisense driver for Windows 2003. This is just completely unacceptable - their own hardware does not support their own OS. |

Hey, kevinu, lay off dude. Some small shops have only ONE server, if that. So things like a test lab/enviroment, extra servers, extra PCs, and... well... $MONEY$ are kinda hard to come by, homey! Some IT people HAVE TO work right there on the server!
That being said, I think ShanTheMan should quit whining about it because it's only the freakin scroll wheel, and the rest of the mouse still works just fine, right? This post was edited by IronCladLou on Monday, August 25, 2003 at 14:17. |

I want to put this into context: I am a developer and my workstation is Windows 2003 because I develop server applications. Because I use the operating system for my development desktop and because I don't want to get Carpal Tunnel, I want a good mouse (of which the wireless intellimouse explorer counts for me).
And finally, no, the mouse does not work properly, and I am unable to get support because I cannot install the drivers. So, it matters a lot to me. I find it very frustrating that they do not support their own OS; especially for a company that flouts eating its own dogfood. |

#8 This has nothing to do with security. All I want is an installable Intellipoint mouse driver for Windows 2003 Server. FYI - Windows 2003 Server as a desktop rocks! It blows away Windows 2000 from a stability problem (I have two monitors and was experiencing a lot of memory / video issues throughout the life of Windows 2000), and WAY better than XP. I develop websites (many concurrently) and the ability to run local copies of each is very important - this is not possible with XP. To run a seperate server would require another license - of which I am not that anxious to purchase.
By the way - you can use IE on Windows 2003 by default. The only major difference is that it is locked down and you have to authorize sites that you visit. FYI - my previous workstation was running Windows 2000 Server, of which I upgraded to Windows 2003 server. Going back to Windows 2000 Server would be a major step backwards, especially considering that all my web solutions are ASP.NET. |
