A simple solution would be just to use PDF files more frequently.
In any case, most of the "dangers" described in this document stem from pre Word 97 SR-1, where FastSave was on by default. With Office 2003 soon to be released, these problems are becoming a lot more obscure.

How can you say "Nothing to see here" and then proceed to write TWO paragraphs on the subject?
Unix and Linux users can turn to tools such as Antiword and Catdoc to turn the document, including its formatting information, into a simple text file.
Um, Save as Text in Word?!?! Sheesh. But how many people really want to do that, anyhow?
