One of the projects I have so far managed to put off this summer is writing a book about troubleshooting Microsoft Windows. I have a publisher and a contract and if I'd turn in a first chapter they'd even send me a check. Finish the book and I'd collect royalties. So why haven't I started the book? Probably because of the futility I sometimes feel when troubleshooting my own Windows systems. I've always been able to make things better, but often I can't say for sure what fixed the problem or even what the exact trouble was in the first place. | ||

You can do this; it's called an "upgrade" installation. If he doesn't know that, then he's not even qualified to write a Windows troubleshooting book. True, Windows is often hard to diagnose; you just need to know all of the tricks (and, when you know them, put them into a book). |

My guide to system stability:
I don't know what Norton Systemworks does, never had a need for it. Generally every time I've seen a system hang, it's not software it is hardware. Software tends to cause things to throw exceptions that may or may not be handled properly. With hardware, things just lock up. I had an interesting situation where my computer would freeze up and I'd have to reboot. But what I noticed one day was that when it did freeze I could still connect to it via the network. I determined that the freeze was caused by the video card, so my first conclusion after that was it was overheating. Opened up case, pointed fan at it and had no more lockups. |

Soda,
I was looking at a Gateway for someone. It would lock up everytime right before the desktop would load (normal or safe mode). It was software related (something that a good format and re-install would fix) :) Alister |

| Consider the source. ZDNet has been anti-Microsoft for several years now. They are a bunch of Netscrape users that refuse to let go. |
