Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Aug. 3. Linux will take center stage in the coming week, with the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo taking place in San Francisco. One important topic will likely be SCO Group's claim that Linux contains code that infringes on SCO's Unix intellectual property. Keynote speakers will include Peter Blackmore, Hewlett-Packard's enterprise systems group executive vice-president and Jonathan Schwartz, Sun Microsystems' software group executive vice president. Cisco Systems will also grab some of the spotlight, as the networking giant gears up to report its quarterly earnings. Investors will keep a keen eye on Cisco's financial results, given that the tech company serves as a bellwether for the industry. | ||

I installed RH Linux 9 on my brand new P4-2.0Ghz, 256MB Ram, 40GB ATA-100 HD Dell PowerEdge 450C and it crawls... Windows XP is smokin' on it.
Why is XFree86 so god-awful slow? I must be missing something major. Anyhow, because of this, it's pretty useless. OpenOffice takes about 1 solid minute to load from shortcut-click to typing a document. The screensavers are excellent though. Top quality, bravo to the X folks for that. If only the Linux developers spent half as much time on making the OS better than the POS it is right now as they do writing screensavers, Linux would be pretty darn cool. |

Thanks for the response guys. I expected flame but you guys were fairly professional.
#3: Not sure about accelerated drivers. I assume those are not loaded by default for some retarded reason, right? I ran /usr/bin/redhat-config-xfree86 which presented me with many options including the driver I wish to use for the Video card. This particular comp has an ATI Rage XL 8MB (which is a crappy card, I know. I don't expect the 3D screen savers to go very fast and they don't, which is understandable). However, I do expect apps to run reasonable fast. Why does the video card determine how long it takes an app like OO to run? #4: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 254780 251280 3500 0 65244 104324 -/+ buffers/cache: 81712 173068 Swap: 522104 28668 493436 Hrm... why is there so much memory in use? I guess I have postgre and Apache and everything running. I can stop those. Is there a cool service utility like in Windows to easily stop/start services like that? I know you can do it from the cmd-line, but it's a pain. Thanks, daz |

| nevermind... /usr/bin/redhat-config-services is a decent service config applet. Not as nice as Windows ;) but not horrible :) |

Ok, so it turns out that I don't have a lot of crap running. Httpd, postgre, etc are all off by default.
I think the memory use is so high because Linux uses all available RAM for cache n'stuff (I remember that from previous versions) and as Apps need more RAM, the OS will back off. That's cool, better to use all that ram than leave it empty. That's fine. I just rebooted after disabling some other services and whatnot and everything's cool. I open OpenOffice Writer (Word, basically) and it took 10 seconds just for the splash screen and 25 seconds (total) to reach the point where I could start typing (not including the 5s for me to click away the Register Now screen). I exited and reopened and it took 5-6 seconds to reopen. Not bad. Things are working a little better now. I guess it just takes 3-4 reboots in Linux to get things going :) Also, one "feature" which really annoys the hell out of me is the rando mand spontaneous movement of the mouse cursor to X:0 Y:0. It does this about once every 2-3 minutes. The mouse is fine, I use it on my Windows box and I used it on this same computer when it had Windows XP on it. No jerkiness or warping in the pointer. Just Linux. But real men don't use Mice in Linux, right? :) |

As someone who has worked with Unix for years, I'd say your understanding is pretty poor. In fact if you follow a lot of open source projects, one of the laments is how unportable the code written by the Linux people is. It relies on features of the gcc compiler, as well as subtleties of Linux itself. |
