Thanks Adrian, Thomas. ActiveWin.com Exclusive. Microsoft has posted it's Beta 1 version of Microsoft J#.Net Version 7.0 Beta 1 for download, it hasn't been posted on Download Center yet and the file is dated October 11, so it is unclear if this is a leak or not. However, it is on Microsoft's public servers and it is available for download. Here are some of the details: "Introduction Welcome to Beta 1 of Microsoft Visual J# .NET. Microsoft Visual J# .NET is a development tool that developers who are familiar with the java-language syntax can use to build applications and services on the .NET Framework. It integrates the java-language syntax into the Visual Studio .NET shell. Microsoft Visual J# .NET also supports the functionality found in VJ++ 6.0 including Microsoft extensions. Microsoft Visual J# .NET is not a tool for developing applications intended to run on a Java Virtual Machine. Applications and services built with Visual J# .NET will run only in the .NET Framework. Visual J# .NET has been independently developed by Microsoft. It is not endorsed or approved by Sun Microsystems, Inc." System Requirements:

Interesting comment #12. But if that is true why would developers stay with Java since it does not provide any answers to the questions you propose.
It's especially troublesome that it's an untested environment linked to a single platform that doesn't scale coming from a company that is totally clueless about privacy. |

| I don't care about cross plaform. I want my code to run as fast as possible. Java code looks nice and is pretty easy to code for. But the end result is not good. From what I have read so far .Net runs faster, while giving me some of the benefits of Java. That is a win win situation as far as I am concerned. |

We have a vendor trying to sell us a very expensive data processing system. http://www.xldynamics.com
The whole backend is written using Enterprise Java Beans, etc. The front end is a proprietary web browser like system. From what I've been told, they even like to run the backend on Linux systems. They quote right on their web site that they initially tried to write the front end using Java as well, but the performance sucked. Since 99.5% of their customers are running Windows they decided the best technical solution was to write an interface which focused on high performance. That's the reality. Most Java believers live in peter pan land. |

This argument is silly and pointless.
Java usage and growth is highly exagerrated, and has been for years. |

You believe the hype, that's clear. While Java does have some following, it is not signifigant to believe your position that not developing in Java makes you doomed to obsolescence. The nice thing about .Net is that it's relatively easy for a developer who has had experience with Java to move into it and use it. And that's the point tought by ComSci, the language isn't nearly as important as the concepts. I learned Pascal while I was in college, as did most students of my age. .Net is available today in beta, and is most certainly not useless. I think it's clear you haven't even looked at it, so why are you commenting on it? |
