SCO Group, a company that says Linux infringes on its Unix intellectual property, announced on Monday that it has been granted key Unix copyrights and will start a program to let companies that run Linux avoid litigation by paying licensing fees. | I suspect that any predictions are highly immature at this point as only a few people so far have seen tiny bits of the evidence. |

Of course even if the offending code is removed, someone will be resposible for the 12 years of misuse, and someone will be ordered to pay SCO in the billions. |

What a brilliant strategy by SCO and their legal term to first go after the users of Linux and not the distributors. But what else could you expect from David Boies. Maybe you remember him from the Microsoft trial? I guess the cheers have now changed to boos from the Linux crowd. Did you also notice that Sun along with Microsoft have already paid the licensing fees, so I wonder what side Sun is on in this case?
As this will not go to trial till probably 2005 the uncertainity surrounding Linux will probably have a major effect on sales, and the few Linux companies that are not yet struggling with bankruptcy will be pushed in that direction. The venture capital money which keeps most of these companies alive will dry up. |

I am always an optimist and if most of my predictions come true I will be extremely happy. Linux advocates have also been predicting that they will take over the desktop every year for the last 5 years or more. I see the usage is stalled at least than one percent with stagnant growth. Are you calling them on their predictions. By the way the License fee for SCO Unixware 7.1.3 is $4,999, so I hope all you Linux users have deep pockets. |
