The crux of this whole deal is that Suse is a German company that is based just outside of Munich and even after Microsoft undercut the competition in terms of the cost and added training and services the good elected officials of Munich wouldn't buy. The sad part about this whole business, beside the ad naseum articles about it, is that the real losers are the employees working for the city of Munich - they end up with crap for software and the tax payers of Munich - they end up with a hardware and software bundle that is more costly and reduces the efficiency of their government because these employees are stuck with crap for software. But, who really cares, Germany's economy is in the toilet anyway with no daylight anytime soon although the DAX is acting as if they won a war - bringing democracy to a country and peace to a region, cut interest rates, and gave themselves a tax cut - no wait a minute - that was us! |

Can you really say that going with Microsoft would have been cheaper over a 50 or 100 year time scale?
The same could be said about Linux... honestly, I'm not sure that anyone can say with a straight face that Linux or Windows (as we know them, anyway) will be in use in 100 years. Your point about it being a German company... excuse me, but that's GOOD... Yes, it is. Anyone who disputes that a government should support "local" businesses is not thinking properly. The problem is that this is being trumpeted as a success for Linux, not for the German economy, which is what it really is. In fact, you are bringing up why there will be a trend among governments outside the US... Probably, but that's bound to be a good thing. Just because a product is made locally doesn't make it the best choice. It will no doubt bring about stong wave of innovation in both Windows and Linux camps, which is good for everyone. |

LOL cba314... do you actually think that "entrenchment" is limited to Microsoft? Do you not see what IBM and the other hordes of highly-compensated consultants are doing? They feed you the free heroine (Linux) and make you pay from that point on.
And the point about them picking a home-town company is that THE MEDIA IS IGNORING IT to the mostpart. That was the big factor (well, that an Germany's economic depression) in there decision. And dont forget, that we are talking about 14,000 desktops. Whereas Microsoft signed half a MILLION desktops the very next week for the Dept of Defense. And that was just a single deal. HALF A MILLION compared to 14k. |

You're absolutely correct. Apple will be on it's 125th year of 'Dying' and will have won the OS wars with MacOS "Tabby-Cat", or whatever it will be called. :) TL |
