If you can get good quality cable (or build your own), you can run s-video much longer than 6 feet without (much/ymmv) quality loss. A few years ago, I got some connectors and about 30 feet of cable from Radio Shack and soldered everything together with good results going from a Hollywood Plus to the s-video input on a surround receiver (and it was cheaper than buying a pre-made cable of that length). You can also get an s-video amp to boost the signal for runs of up to 50 feet or more (haven't used one personally).
Another alternative is to get a dual-head or second video card and use one of the DVI or VGA outs. The cable is probably more expensive, but you'd likely get better quality.
