David Pogue compares MSN Messenger 6 with iChat AV, both currently in beta form for The New York Times. "Even in their preliminary incarnations, these programs illustrate two important points. First, the addition of voice and video changes the experience so profoundly, it's not really chat any more. Second, Apple and Microsoft may as well have come from different planets," Pogue writes. "For example, Microsoft, true to tradition, has focused on expanding its list of features, while Apple has worked toward elegance and simplicity. Messenger is a cacophony of brightly colored buttons, panels, blinking advertisements and, in the new version, animated (and even homemade) smileys; iChat AV maintains the clean lines and brushed-metal 'surfaces' of its text-only predecessors," explains Pogue. | ||

Um, I think audio and video have been around in MSN Messenger for quite some time now.... (They do mention this much later in the article... so why not say it here?) "Messenger 6, in its ultimate form, will be free; iChat AV will cost $30 (but will be free with Apple's next operating-system release, Mac OS X 10.3, code-named Panther, due by year's end)." This may be Apple's mistake--now matter how you slice it, you'll have to pay to get iChat AV. :( "It requires a video camera with FireWire (a very fast connector also found on every Macintosh)." Not a bad idea, but this is an additional investment for lots of folks. Incidently, can you tell how the "demo" of their software uses stock photography? The woman and her child in the foreground aren't looking at their screen, and neither is the person in the PIP window... so neither of them are looking at each other. Unless you can mount Apple's iSight camera (which does sound very nice) directly inside the middle of monitor itself, this is not how a video chat is going to look. "But neither can capture audio or video calls - a missed opportunity." Definitely!! Microsoft? Apple? Also, it's interesting--I'm noticing as I'm typing this how MacDaily only captures what they want to hear from the article.... "Unfortunately, as in most Internet 'phone call' technologies, there's an annoying lag of up to one second..." And that's the reason it will not likely "change the way we communicate" as Jobs would have us believe. |

I love how Jobs stated in his keynote that iChatAV is the first IM client to support audio and video...
Oh wait, this is Apple we are talking about, this is what they ALWAYS do. |

| The comment "But neither can capture audio or video calls - a missed opportunity." makes me wonder if its for legal reasons. Isn't it illegal in some states to record audio conversations without both parties' consent? I'm not sure about video. |
