Novell Moves Ahead With Linux | |

Despite a recent run-in with the SCO Group, Novell is moving forward with plans to offer its network services on Linux. Novell on Tuesday introduced Nterprise Linux Services, which, when available later this year, will give companies file, print, messaging, directory, and management services in a package supported by the Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server operating systems. | ||

| I can only imagine what a ruckus this is causing internally at Novell. Their Netware group is pretty defensive of the Netware OS. However, when they announce support for another OS (outside of NDS offerings), it's usually more in name only... most people are still going to run the software on Netware, anyhow. You can run GroupWise on NT, for example, but it's pretty rare to find anyone that's actually doing it by choice. |

| Maybe now Novell will release a full-blown client for Linux...thus making life easier for all of us. I'm tired of having to mess with ncpfs and the like. |

Let's clarify some marketing-puke speak here:
"Novell's venture into the Linux market strengthens its relationships with Dell, IBM, and HP" Translated to English means: "Novell's desperate last-ditch grasp for Linux might make it look better as a buy-out target for Dell, IBM, or HP. Or, at least, Dell, IBM, and HP might toss Novell a bone once in awhile if they have something that runs on Linux." |
