Pocket PC 2003 Is Finally Here! | |

<%=GetPoll(76)%> Well, the big day has finally arrived. Microsoft has officially announced Pocket PC 2003, which it's renamed Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. It's the third major release of the platform, which debuted in April 2000 and was last updated in October 2001, and Microsoft claims it's the best performing and most stable version yet. The latest version of this operating system offers improvements in the areas of communications and multimedia, with an newer, better Connection Manager for setting up connections to devices and networks, the addition of Pocket MSN, and a new application for viewing and editing images, called Pictures. But most of the changes are under the hood as Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC is primarily about supporting Microsoft's .NET strategy. | ||

| I just picked up a Toshiba E355 PocketPC 2003, and it is pretty darn nice. As for whether or not it quits applications on it's own when you are done with them, I don't know. I always click on the X when I am done, just like in Windows. |

| the only problem I have with these pocket pc's is upgrading the OS... and possibly hardware. I think more people would spend the money on a PocketPC if they knew that next year they could upgrade to the latest... rather than sitting there going... "man I should have waited 1 more year" |

Mr. Humpty,
The new PocketPCs do have Flash Memory for the OS, allowing you to upgrade the OS without having to buy a new PPC. And this flash memory doesn't take away from your storage or performance memory. |

I understand that. However, to go from 2001 to 2002 you had to have Compaq's device because of its processing power. I still haven't seen anything that resembles upgrading from 2002 to 2003 on "most" devices. I can see that some of the lower end devices won't be able to run the new os but the medium to high end devices should be able to at least go up 1 version or so. |

Ok this is weak. The hardware vendor decides if it wants to let you upgrade or not...

Technically, all Pocket PC 2002 devices are capable of supporting the new Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC. Pocket PC 2000 devices are not however upgradeable to this latest software release. While your Pocket PC 2002 is technically upgradeable, each individual original equipment manufacturer (manufacturer) (i.e. the company that manufactured your Pocket PC) ultimately decides whether or not to offer a software upgrade. Manufacturers may choose not to offer an upgrade for all Pocket PC models in all languages in all countries. Why can’t I buy the software upgrade directly from Microsoft? While Microsoft makes the Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC, it does not sell this software directly to the public. Microsoft sells its software exclusively to manufacturers who optimize it to perform on their specific Pocket PC hardware design. These optimizations are required to make the software perform optimally on a specific device. As a result, only your manufacturer can provide you an upgrade. |

GhostRider - I filled that out about six weeks ago. My status is listed as like 'Order Reviewed' or something, which apparently means they are going to send my a Viewsonic V37 PocketPC any day now.(8-12 weeks, weather permitting).
So I guess I'm going to be upgrading from PocketPC 2000 to either 2002 or 2003 depending on what this V37 comes with. :) |
