The Microsoft Supplemental UI Library for Visual J# .NET provides much of the functionality described in the Java 2 JFC Swing specification. This product has been independently developed by Microsoft, and is not endorsed or approved by Sun Microsystems, Inc. Applications written to target the Microsoft Supplemental UI Library for Visual J# .NET will only run on the Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package v1.1. | ||

I still don't get the point of J#.
I mean, Java and .NET are sufficiently far enough apart, that trying to make Java programmers feel at home on .NET is only going to create more confusion because it's never going to be EXACTLY alike, and it's only going to encourage them to program the Java way, not the .NET way, so when anyone else tries to use their libraries from another language in .NET, it's not going to make sense. |

#1: I'll tell you what the point is: I have an astronomy application written in java that I run on my laptop. I used to take my laptop out in the back yard to locate stars. A laptop is portable, but it is not as easy as it could be. My solution: I recompiled the app using J#. Then I made a web service out of the app that would send bitmaps to my Pocket PC, which has a wireless card which, after repositioning my base station a bit, reached outside to where I place my telescope.
Visual Studio .NET has easy to use tools for creating web services, which I have experience using. I don't know how to create web services with java. I had the source in java, but didn't want to spend time converting the code to C# which would be error prone and time consiming. With a simple recompile, fixing 2 compile errors among 1000s of lines of code (which were actual bugs with the source, not the compiler), and writing a bit of additional code, I soved my problem and made the program easier to use. Now that I have the code running, I am slowly converting the code to C# at my convenience while still being able to run it. Hopefully I will have everything converted to the point that when I take a trip later this year to the middle of nowhere (where light pollution is not as bad) everything will run on my PPC so I will not need my laptop. If that is not a good use of J#, than I don't know what is. |

#2: There are different expectations in the design of apps between Java and .NET.
For example, .NET has delegates and events, Java does not (i'm not arguing which is better, but there are just different design considerations when using events or not using events). If a Java guy wrote a J# library just like he would in Java. A typical .NET programmer would look at the library members and the way of using it and go, "Huh?" because it doesn't look and feel like any of the other .NET libraries. There are expectations. Sure, it'll be IL compatible, but it won't make much sense or "fit" in with the other .NET libraries. |

#3: I could make specific cases as to why programming in x86 assembly is much better than any other language, but it's just that, a specific case.
I'm glad J# worked for you and it's awesome that it was so easy. I don't think J# should go away necessarily, but I don't think that MS should be promoting it as the tool all Java programmers should be using because I think it'll just promote Java programmers to come over to .NET and start programming poorly (from a .NET sense. I'm not saying that Java programmers program poorly, but that Java-style programming in .NET is not good) and create confusion. On the other hand though, I think I can see how MS would rather deal with the problem of a bunch of former Java programmers spewing out incorrect code than having no former Java programmers at all :) |

Last I checked, I don't see where you can say:
public event SomethingHappenedHandler SomethingHappened; like you can in .NET. In Java, they have anonymous methods that you attach. It's a form of doing events, but there is a long discussion to be had that says that .NET's event/delegate model is inferior and a hack to lure VB programmers whereas Java's anonymous methods and interface-based event handling is more OO-pure. Please don't start arguments you can't finish. |
